Sweet Spot Inaccessible

PROJECT ID: 13

Artist: Youngjoo Jennifer Ryu The core objective of this exhibition was to subvert the concept of the "Sweet Spot"—the ideal listening position. By arranging multiple speakers at diverse heights and angles and activating them selectively at specific times, we intentionally created a vast acoustic environment where a singular, perfect listening point is impossible to reach. To capture this complex spatial experience, I worked closely with the lead artist during the pre-production phase to meticulously map out the camera movement. We co-designed a "movement choreography" that synchronized with the temporal activation of the speakers (highlighted in the floor plan). During the actual archiving, I navigated the space using a gimbal-mounted camera equipped with an Ambisonic microphone for 360-degree spatial audio capture. An assistant accompanied me with an iPad, providing real-time cues from our pre-planned synchronized movement chart to ensure frame-perfect timing. To bridge the gap between the physical installation and the video observer, I developed a real-time mini-map UI—similar to a video game interface—located in the upper right corner. This visualization was not merely an aesthetic choice but a functional tool designed to track the camera's path and indicate active speaker zones in real-time, allowing the audience to intuitively grasp the spatial logic of the work.
